The Virginia Saltwater Sportfishing Association (VSSA) is pleased to offer a digital file collection in addition to our reef book which contains a comprehensive collection of waypoints and images covering all 15 of Virginia’s artificial reefs/fish havens (to include Blackfish Bank and Parramore fish haven). These digital files are a master waypoints database and high resolution imagery overlays which are hosted on Google Earth (Pro). Google Earth is a free download for your PC, phone or tablet. On a phone or tablet with GPS enabled, you can navigate directly to the structure. The GPX files contain all the waypoints listed in the reefbook (and more) as well as individual structure outlines that will display on most GPS chartplotter units. Please click the link below to purchase now. You don’t need a paypal account as you can pay with a credit card.

The VSSA is allocating 100% of the proceeds from reef book sales to fund enhancements to Virginia’s existing artificial reefs and the creation of new reef habitats.

To support the VSSA’s efforts to fund these projects, Matt Ellis, an avid wreck angler, has developed master waypoints databases and high resolution imagery overlays which are hosted on Google Earth (Pro). Matt created GPX files that contain all the waypoints listed in the reefbook (and more) as well as individual structure outlines that will display on most GPS chartplotter units. Lastly, Matt is developing high resolution imagery files into a manageable size and format which can be imported and displayed as chart maps for Navico units (soon to be released for an additional cost). Here’s a list of the fish havens that are covered in the VSSA reef book/electronic files:
- Asphalt Reef
- Back River Reef
- Blackfish Banks
- Cabbage Patch Reef
- Cherrystone Reef
- East Oceanview Reef
- Nassawadox Reef
- Nundua Puncoteague Reef
- Newport News Reef
- Northern Neck Reef
- Occonhannock Reef
- Parramore Reef
- Tower Reef
- Triangle Reef
- Wachapreague Reef
- Windmill Point Reef
Cost is $150 Reduced to $99 until October 1, 2019. There are well over 1000 waypoints and structure outlines included with the VSSA fish haven mapping tools. 40% of the proceeds from the sale of the electronic mapping tools will go directly to the VSSA reef building program so by purchasing these digital files you are helping the Virginia Reef Program. Please note: The files to download are huge, about 2.7 GB. Recommend the initial download NOT be on a phone but on a PC, tablet, or notebook with a fast internet connection. Download the files into a folder you created. The file that will work for Google Earth (phone or PC) is a single file that end in kmz but the GPX files are separate for each fish haven. For your chartplotter, users will have to convert the GPX files into the format for the specific chartplotter. There are too many chartplotters on the market for us to be able to it for each. Just google how to convert GPX for your make/model chartplotter and it should work. Users are cautioned that some chart plotters may not be able to hold all the waypoints so recommend only importing the fish havens you plan to fish. Once the gpx is concerted save the file to a memory card that your chartplotter used then import into your chartplotter. While fishing you will have the waypoints and structure outlines on your chartplotter but you can use Google Earth on your phone or tablet to see the structure.
